What is Mind in the Making?
In 2000, MITM founder Ellen Galinsky began a research journey fueled by a question: how to keep the fire for learning — which every child is born with — lighting up the eyes of children? To answer the question, she reviewed more than 2,000 studies and conducted in-depth interviews with and filmed more than 130 leading researchers who study children’s development and learning. From what she learned, Galinsky developed a framework of the 7 Essential Life Skills. The work grew into MITM, a national movement to share scientifically based research and strategies for promoting Life Skills, reaching millions of people in communities across the country, and counting.
How is Mind in the Making Unique?
Each of the eight MITM Learning Modules offer transformational learning that:
ENGAGES professionals in an experiential process of self-reflection and self-discovery to explore their own competence in each of the executive function-based life skills, probe why each skill is important in their own lives and proposing strategies to improve the skill in themselves.
CONNECTS adults’ experiences to the research on the skills in children’s lives—why it’s important, how it develops and how it can be promoted—through information and videos that that are virtual field trips to the labs of the most respected and compelling child development researchers, who share what they study and what they have learned on the skills in an accessible and compelling way.
EMPLOYS specific evidence-based activities that participants can use to promote the skill in children.
ALLOWS each participant to create action plans to promote the skills in themselves and in children, which they revisit in subsequent modules.
This training is unique in sharing both classic and cutting-edge research on children’s development, on the science of learning and thriving, including executive-function and EF based life skills. This evidence-based professional development provides a common language and approach that is designed to fit with and complement existing systems of professional development and equips attendees to share the information within their organizations and communities.
Our Story
MITM training provides opportunities for adults to examine child development research and themselves to create strategic actions they can take to promote executive function-based skills in children ages 0-8. Over the past 15+ years, we have offered in-person and Virtual Learning Modules training to about 150,000 educators, community leaders, families and professionals from education, libraries, medical facilities, museums, home visiting, parent education, churches, juvenile justice and more.
